Work is complete for a new student housing complex near the UC Berkeley campus, architecture firm Studio KDA announced this week.

The Valiant, developed by a joint venture between Canyon Real Estate Partners, LLC, The Martin Group, and Valiance Capital, is an eight-story, approximately 80,000-square-foot building located at 2538 Durant Avenue. The property includes 83 apartments in a mix of studio, one-, two-, three-, and four-bedroom layouts ranging from 462 to 1,132 square feet in size. The building provides a total or 265 beds.

Studio KDA's design for The Valiant includes simple lines, with a street-facing facade highlighted by a projecting bay element housing amenities below and an outdoor deck above. The building also includes a rooftop deck overlooking the UC Berkeley campus and San Francisco Bay.

Resident amenities include coworking spaces, a fitness center, and secured bicycle parking. The property opens in advance of the start of UC Berkeley's fall semester on August 19, and will see move-ins begin on August 14. The building's market-rate beds are already 98 percent leased, per a Studio KDA news release.

"The design process with the client was highly collaborative,” said Studio KDA's Buddy Williams in a statement. "The idea of an oasis emerged early in our design discussions. The demands of higher education can be intense, and we wanted to create housing that would support students' needs for focused studying as well as opportunities to relax and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow students.”
