Last week, BART officials and developer Related California marked the start of work on a new affordable housing complex at the El Cerrito Plaza BART Station.

The project, which is the first component of a development that will eventually encompass 6.5 acres, will consist of 70 affordable homes for households earning between 30 and 60 percent of the Contra Costa County area median income level. Plans eventually call for 743 apartments.

The master plan for the station site includes a 22,000-square-foot plaza, as well as 20,000 square feet of space for a potential public library, 21,00 square feet of retail uses, and parking for BART passengers. Off-site improvements will include the addition of bike lanes on surrounding streets.

Completion is expected in late 2027.

“This project exemplifies what we can accomplish when transit, housing, and community priorities align,” said BART Director Barnali Ghosh in a news release. “By building high-quality, affordable homes right next to BART, we make it easier for families to thrive while reducing traffic, emissions, and long commutes, strengthening both our neighborhoods and our regional transportation system.”

Other members of the project team include architecture firms Pyatok and Van Meter Williams Pollack, landscape architecture firm Einwiller Kuehl, BKF Engineers, Satellite Affordable Housing Associates, and Holliday Development.
