Construction is slated to begin later this year for a new mixed-use development at BART's West Oakland Station, the transit agency announced last week.

The project from Mandela Station Partners, LLC - dubbed Mandela Station - would include 762 residential units (including 240 affordable units) accompanied by retail, offices, streetscape improvements, as station plaza, and bike infrastructure.

The initial phase, consisting of 240 affordable housing units in a portion of the parking lot, is set to begin work in mid-2026.

Soil testing in advance of construction will occur starting this week, taking portions of the lot out of commission. Larger lot closures will follow in mid-2026.

The completed project will include 300,000 square feet of offices and 53,000 square feet of commercial space. In addition to the seven-story affordable housing building, plans call for a 31-story market rate apartment tower and a 100-foot mid-rise office building.

The project team includes MacFarlane Partners, Hensel Phelps, JRDV Urban International, Suda, HEC.
