“One day, if I go to heaven… I’ll look around and say, ‘It ain’t bad, but it ain’t San Francisco.’”
— Herb Caen, American journalist
The Bay Area is a place of constant reinvention, where innovation meets rich history, and a complex real estate landscape reflects its dynamic spirit. From the tech-driven developments reshaping Silicon Valley to the ongoing housing affordability and urban growth challenges, there’s always a story to tell. That’s where Urbanize San Francisco comes in. Our mission is to explore and document the projects, policies, and trends shaping the region’s built environment—and to create a space for thoughtful conversation about the future of this extraordinary part of the world.
From SOMA to the Sunset, Silicon Valley to the East Bay, and up to wine country, we’ll track the projects and policies shaping the future of the Bay Area.
Urbanize began in Los Angeles in 2015, born out of a passion for cities and the stories they tell through urban planning and development. Since then, we’ve expanded to cities like Atlanta, Detroit, Chicago, and New York. Each site is led by editors who share a deep love for urban life. We’re thrilled to bring that energy to San Francisco and the greater Bay Area.
This site is just starting, and there’s much work ahead (and maybe a bug or two to squash). But we’re here for the long haul and want to hear from you. Tell us what matters to you, what stories you want to see, and what conversations you think are missing.
Reach out via email, tweet at us, leave a comment, or find us on Instagram and Facebook. We’re listening. Together, let’s make sense of San Francisco’s and the Bay Area's ever-evolving story.
